Where to turn when I’m... FULL OF DOUBT
In the world today, we are continually assailed by conflicting ideas, new science and changing social norms. It can often be hard to stand firm in what we believe when we are constantly battered by beliefs that stand in stark contrast to Christianity. Added to this, the Devil loves nothing more than to whisper doubt into our ears, attempting to snuff out our faith with his insidious lies about God’s goodness, the hope of forgiveness, the promise of eternal life. When doubt washes over us, it can be so easy to be crippled by it, and find ourselves trapped in the same cycles of guilt and self-loathing. If you, like me, often find yourself facing doubts, you may find the following verses helpful:
God promises comfort to those who doubt.
Psalm 94 v 19 - When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.
2. Ask God for help in your doubts.
Mark 9 v 24 - Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”
3. Remember the abundance of God’s goodness.
Mark 8 v 17-19 - Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember? When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”
4. Meeting with other Christians encourages our souls
Hebrews 10 v 24-25 - “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
5. The Father’s hand is secure.
John 10 v 28-29 - I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.
6. The Holy Spirit guarantees our inheritance.
Ephesians 1 v 13-14 - “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.”
7. God never leaves us alone
Hebrews 13 v 5 - Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
